If you’ve decided to have LASIK surgery done on your eyes, the first step is to select the right surgeon. As you do so, you’ll want to consider factors such as the doctor’s experience, qualifications personality, reputation, the equipment he’ll be using, and the cost. Most important, of course, are the surgeon’s experience and qualifications. After all, the surgeon’s performance will impact your vision, positively or negatively, for as long as you live.
Most eye doctors are quite talented and good at the surgeries they perform. This doesn’t mean that they’re all good, however, because they certainly are not. Therefore, don’t forget to investigate and research thoroughly all doctors that you’re considering requesting to perform your eye surgery.
Research, first of all, the doctor’s reputation. When an eye surgeon maintains membership in a few different professional associations, he shows a fair amount of commitment to that profession. Make sure, however, that the associations he’s part of are relevant to his field of practice. Membership in something that does not pertain to LASIK does not count.
Your next step, if possible, is to research the opinions of some of the surgeon’s previous patients. While you shouldn’t let these opinions alone sway you, they can provide valuable facts that will help you decide.
Also, research the number of LASIK patients this surgeon has had, and when he first started. Every doctor has his “first patient” (scary as that might be)…but that doesn’t mean you have to be that first patient.
After you’ve researched the reputation of the doctor, take time to research the reputation of the medical center where he works. How good is the equipment he uses? But this information really only helps you if you also investigate the LASIK equipment being used and can decide which has the best reputation. Generally this will mean employing the latest available technology. The internet can be a good resource with looking for information on lasik surgery cost or lasik eye surgery.
Finally, don’t ignore that nagging hunch when you’re selecting a LASIK surgeon. You’ll want to set up an appointment so that you can talk face to face with the prospective surgeon. And regardless of his reputation or the fact that he uses the best equipment, if you simply do not have confidence in him after speaking with him, then look somewhere else. It’s amazing how many times human intuition turns out to be right. And even if your intuition is leading you astray, it’s never a bad idea to do what’s necessary to give you comfort and confidence prior to your surgery. And this means you should always work only with doctors in whom you have complete trust.
