How To Pick The Best Doctor for Eye Surgery

March 6th, 2009 · No Comments · Eye Care Tips

While some people may just open the phone book and just call the first ad that catches their attention, this may not be something that you want to do. This may be an okay routine if you are looking for someone to come plow your driveway but it is not okay when you are looking for someone to do surgery on your eyes.

Locating a qualified eye surgeon in your area is very important, and you will need to approach your search with this in mind.  Perhaps you won’t have any difficulties getting a referral to a quality office located an hour or two away from where you live – this tends to be pretty common when you’re trying to find a doctor or surgeon.  But, you should try to find someone closer to home so that you won’t waste so much time commuting.

Also, if there are any problems that occur such as infections or irritations after surgery then you will want that surgeon to be a hop, skip, and a jump away from you. So how does one search for a good eye surgeon? You already know that you simply cannot trust what the billboards say or what the local television commercials are telling you.

Just because a surgeon has the money to place an advertisement in the yellow pages does not mean he is a good doctor, so make sure you squash that idea right away.  But in all seriousness, how can you distinguish between a good surgeon and a bad one if you’ve never done this before?

Start by talking with friends, family, co-workers, and anyone else that you can in order to get personal references. If you are able to come across people who have had procedures done by local eye surgeons then you can learn a lot from their experiences. Finding these sources may be hard though depending on the amount of people in your local area that you know.

But what if you just aren’t comfortable querying people about their medical histories?  If this is an issue for you, you might begin by taking the names of several local surgeons and researching their backgrounds online.  The amount of information that you can find online is pretty astonishing.

It should be pretty easy to find information on any malpractice complaints or lawsuits for a particular surgeon.  Bad news travels quickly, so if there’s anything like this in the doctor’s background, you’re almost sure to come across it.  Once you have checked out a few local eye surgeons, just set up an initial consultation with the ones that interest you most.  You’ll be able to glean a lot about the surgeon at this meeting.

If you don’t have an easy rapport with the surgeon, there is no obligation to set a follow up appointment.  But, if you hit it off with the doctor, it’s a good idea to ask for a summary of their qualifications and few references.  An eye surgeon who won’t provide this information is probably bad news.  Just keep at it, and you’re bound the find the eye surgeon that’s a perfect fit for you.
