TMJ Symptoms, Causes And Treatment

by Kevin Bates

Temporomandibular joint disease is a condition wherein the joint that is responsible for connecting the skull to the jaw becomes inflamed. It causes difficulty in opening the mouth and moving the jaw. It also becomes painful for the sufferer to do so. It also causes headaches, nausea and sometimes, infection of the mouth.

Treating this condition comes in many ways. Morning jaw exercises and using a nighttime biofeedback headband may be enough for cases that aren't too severe. If the condition becomes too severe though, it will need long term treatment and sometimes, patients need to go under the knife in order for the malfunction to be corrected. The importance of an early diagnosis cannot be stressed enough as it will determine what kind of treatment one will need to employ to alleviate his condition and knowing the different TMJ symptoms will help.

There is a variety of TMJ symptoms however, not everything is found in each case. This is due to the fact that it can be caused by many things. One of its causes can be a dental problem. Having unaligned teeth may cause your jaw to contract abnormally, causing more pressure to the jaw when it is opened and closed. Lacking an overbite may also cause the syndrome.

Overusing the jaw can also cause inflammation to the joint. Excessive gum chewing and opening of the mouth are examples of jaw overuse. Bruxism, the clenching of one's teeth unconsciously during his or her sleep, also stresses the jaw. An injury to the jaw may 'traumatize' the joint, causing to swell.

TMJ symptoms include: difficulty in biting or chewing, clicking or popping noises when opening or closing the mouth, earaches and headaches in the morning, hearing loss, migraines, pain in the jaw and reduced ability to open or close the mouth. If you are suffering from this, you may also suffer Tinnitus. This is the hearing of sound absent an external source.

If you are suffering from the things we mentioned above, you should set an appointment with your doctor to make sure. If you have a dental problem and you think that it is the cause, then you may also see a dentist. Again, an early diagnosis is really important as it can help you avoid having to go through excruciating treatment.

Temporomandibular joint syndrome causes pain in the jaw and difficulty in moving your mouth. It can be treated with simple exercises but if the case is too severe, the patient may need to go under the knife. An operation can be avoided by knowing TMJ symptoms and having an early diagnosis.
